Dr. James Francis, LMHC

Do You Understand Your Feelings or Your Behavior?

Do you struggle to understand your feelings or find yourself asking, Why do I do what I do? Have you ever wondered why couples fight or feel disconnected? I can help you answer these questions, transform negative patterns, and move toward lasting emotional growth and healthier relationships.

I am Dr. James Francis (but prefer to be called James). I have a heart for counseling men and women, young adults, couples, and pastors. I keep it real, believe in second chances, and love to meet you where you are.

If you are dealing with anxiety, anger, depression, past trauma, church hurt or abuse, racial-related distress, life transitions, or lack of resilience, I offer tools and strategies to help you find relief and reclaim your emotional well-being. My approach starts with identifying your feelings, understanding the underlying goals of your behavior, and exploring unresolved childhood pain. Together, we can work toward healing, resilience, and personal growth.

Overcoming Negative Core Beliefs & Emotional Blocks

If you're held back by negative core beliefs like “I’m a failure” or “I’m unlovable,” I can help you identify and challenge these self-limiting thoughts. These beliefs often prevent us from moving forward in careers, relationships, and personal growth. If you feel stuck due to the impact of trauma in your life, I’ll provide tools to help you reframe negative thought patterns, replace them with positive, empowering beliefs, and take proactive steps toward the life you desire.

Healing for Couples: Overcoming Communication Barriers, Infidelity, and Betrayal

I’ll help you and your partner create a safe, supportive space to communicate openly, rebuild trust, and deepen your emotional connection. I also specialize in helping couples repair emotional wounds, including the pain caused by infidelity, betrayal, and past trauma. Together, we can create a new foundation for a more fulfilling, harmonious relationship.

A Culturally Attuned, Empathetic Approach to Therapy

As a first-generation Jamaican-American, I understand the unique challenges that come with cultural identity, belonging, and emotional expression. Growing up, I faced difficulties fitting in, which contributed to my own struggles with anger and emotional turmoil. Over time, I learned to understand and channel these powerful emotions, which now enable me to help others understand their own feelings and behaviors.

Whether you’re navigating individual challenges or working to strengthen your relationship, I’m here to help you heal, grow, and create the life and connection you deserve.

I approach therapy with an integrated psychological and theological worldview and believe that scripture is true and divinely inspired which provides insight to help us better understand ourselves and our reality. I believe that science is necessary and also provides empirically validated research critical to understanding how we live and operate in the world. While I deeply value the guidance found in spiritual teachings, I respect each individual's unique beliefs and never impose my faith on anyone. If you're open to exploring spiritual insights, I’m happy to discuss them at a pace and level that aligns with your personal comfort and perspective.
